Derelict Crab Trap Removal Program

In 2018, Mississippi Commercial Fisheries United partnered with Mississippi State University Coastal Research & Extension Center to pilot a derelict crab trap removal program for shrimpers. This program offers a small incentive for shrimpers to properly dispose incidentally caught derelict crab traps during normal shrimping operations. We also work closely with crab fishermen to return any serviceable traps. Over 2,000 derelict crab traps have been removed and recycled since the program’s debut.
